Cover photo: 851×315, but watch the mobile crop
Upload the cover photo at 851×315 pixels. Desktop shows the full width; mobile shows a taller, narrower slice, cutting the left and right edges. Keep any text or key subject in the centre so it survives on phones. Facebook loads the cover fastest as a PNG when it contains text or a logo.
Link previews use 1200×630
When you paste a link, Facebook pulls the page's Open Graph image and displays it at 1200×630 (1.91:1). If you control the page, set that image size in the og:image tag; otherwise Facebook may crop or skip a mismatched image. The same 1200×630 works for a manually uploaded feed image with a link.
