Post portrait, not square: 1080×1350
Instagram accepts square (1080×1080), landscape (1080×566) and portrait (1080×1350) posts, but portrait 4:5 fills the most of a phone screen as someone scrolls, so it gets the most attention. Upload at 1080×1350 pixels. Anything taller than 4:5 gets cropped in the feed.
Stories & Reels safe zone
Stories and Reels are 1080×1920 (9:16). Instagram's interface sits on top of your image: the top ~250px holds the profile row and the bottom ~250px holds the caption, CTA and buttons. Keep any text or logo inside the centre ~1080×1420 region so nothing important is hidden. For Reels, remember the same frame is cropped to 4:5 for your profile grid.
