Upload at least 400×400
Mastodon recommends a 400×400 px square avatar. Uploading larger, such as 1000×1000, keeps it crisp when enlarged. The avatar appears in your profile, timelines, notifications and reply threads.
It is a rounded square
Mastodon displays avatars as a rounded square (soft corners), not a full circle, but still keep your subject centered so nothing important touches the edges.
